Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the day when the last enslaved people in the United States learned of their freedom. On June 19, 1865, Union General Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that enslaved individuals were now free. This momentous occasion marked the end of one of the darkest chapters in American history.
Juneteenth is not only a celebration of freedom, but also a call to action. As we honor this historic day, let us work together to create a more just and equitable society, where all individuals can thrive without fear of violence or discrimination.
As we reflect on Juneteenth, our Black Employee Inclusion Network (BEING), will host an interactive discussion exploring the impact of freedom, race, and crime. We will also recognize this day during our intern experience by hearing from BEING leaders, including Joshua Cloud.
“It’s very important that we begin celebrating together as these types of experiences bring us closer by helping us understand history and how that shapes our society today. This will help foster and encourage others to continue to have these conversations to move forward in the future.”
-Joshua Cloud, Manager in TC-Security and Privacy, Houston, TX
It’s important to remember that Juneteenth is a commitment to progress and unity. Happy Juneteenth!
