October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), and Protiviti is proud to recognize the talent and value of all employees with disabilities and their endless contributions within our organization. To recognize NDEAM and to raise awareness and support of NDEAM’s 2024 theme; “Access to Good Jobs for All,” Protiviti’s Disability Employee Network (DEN) is excited to host a conversation with a Paralympic athlete.
Our Disability Employee Network (DEN) supports our employees who identify as having a disability, who are a caregiver, or who are an ally. DEN promotes learning, inclusion, and intersectionality within the disability space across Protiviti. Natasha Shindler, one of DEN’s pillar co-leader shares why she got involved with DEN.

I got involved with DEN because I’m passionate about encouraging an inclusive environment that embraces the differences caused by disabilities and provides a community for those living with disabilities, directly or indirectly.
When I was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes at age six, it came with so many challenges and fears to navigate. Overnight, I went from enjoying a care-free childhood to counting carbohydrates, sticking myself with multiple needles a day, and worrying about my future. Being diabetic is something that made me very different from my peers. Growing up, I was able to find great comfort in talking to my late grandmother, who was also diabetic. This relationship showed me the power of talking to others with shared experiences. Even with her support, I still worried about my future and if I’d truly be accepted in the workplace.
In September 2017, I flew to Chicago for The Consultant Challenge. It was here that I finally met another Type 1 Diabetic in the workplace. It was so great to see that they were successful in their career! Seeing their success showed me that I would be able to thrive in my career at Protiviti despite the challenges.
Last year, DEN hosted their NDEAM panel, and I heard DEN leaders speaking about their experiences. It was powerful to see leaders being vulnerable and discussing their challenges, but also the unique skills that come from managing their disabilities. Watching them share reminded me of the power of shared experiences from my childhood and that this new group was absolutely the place for me to find my community.
Living with a disability can be incredibly isolating, mentally and physically, but it doesn’t have to be. I encourage anyone searching for a community and support to join a group like DEN.
