Brian Baker, a Managing Director in our Technology Consulting (Enterprise Cloud) Practice based in Nashville, joined us in January 2024. With substantial experience as a Senior Director at another consulting firm prior to joining Protiviti, Brian has quickly become a pivotal member of the Protiviti family.
Now let’s explore some insights from Brian about his experiences since joining Protiviti, shedding light on his decision-making process for taking on this role, his executive discoveries, and why finding joy in your work is crucial for success—further solidifying why Protiviti is recognized as an outstanding place to build a career.
When you were considering your next career move, what led you to consider consulting as an option?
Consulting for me just seemed like the next natural step in my career. I was able to bring my combined 25 plus years in industry experience at multiple companies and levels to become a trusted advisor to some of our top clients globally. This gives me the opportunity to grow my network, personal brand and the Protiviti brand both internally and across our ever-evolving customer landscape.
What has been your biggest “aha” moment in an executive position in consulting?
For me it was when I realized how much of an impact, I could make to my clients at Protiviti. Protiviti’s customers, culture and inclusion are second to none and this came very apparent to me in my interview process and red-carpet onboarding early on. After joining Protiviti I quickly realized that not only did I feel part of the family day one, but I had the backing of the entire leadership team every step of the way. I wish Protiviti and I had crossed paths much sooner!
What have you been pleasantly surprised by during your time with Protiviti?
My biggest surprise is the support that I get from team members, especially other Managing Directors, to ensure my success as a new Managing Director at Protiviti. The collaboration is honestly the best in the industry. Don’t get we wrong, I learn something new every day, but it’s all because of the supportive team members willing to show me the Protiviti way. Protiviti awards for the best place to work and employee choice all speak for themselves!
Can you share some of your ‘keys to success’ since joining Protiviti as a new Managing Director?
For me the biggest key to success is flexibility and being able to pivot at a moment’s notice to handle the needs of our customers. Also building internal relationships is just as important as customer relationships. It takes a stellar support system behind each Managing Director to be successful. Knowing your people within the organization is key so you can offer the best possible solutions and delivery for your customers. I continue to grow each day because of the support and long tenure of consultants and Managing Directors supporting me.
What is the best career advice you would give, or have you received from a Career Advisor and/or mentor?
The best I can give to anyone is you have to be happy doing what you are doing. Your happiness is reflected in everything you do. if you are not happy you are probably not in the right place or role for you. I find my happiness at Protiviti, and this makes me successful in all aspects of my work but also the work of those around me.
