As we approach the long weekend ahead, we wanted to take a moment of pause to honor our fallen this Memorial Day – we salute their bravery and celebrate their dedication to our nation. We are grateful for their sacrifice and the sacrifice of their families. In remembering and honoring our fallen, we also would like to graciously thank our active service members, as well as our Veterans who have fought, and continue to fight, for our freedoms.

At Protiviti, our Veterans Employee Network Group (ENG), seeks to positively impact the careers of employees with prior and on-going military service, as well as support those who have family members who are actively serving. In addition, the Veterans ENG works with our recruiting teams to engage those with military backgrounds seeking to transition in to the industry.

Protiviti Veteran Spotlight: Rachel, Protiviti Associate Director

Rachel is a Associate Director in our Philadelphia office and a leader of our Veterans ENG. We asked her a few questions about her experience in the group.

  • Tell us a little bit about your military background and career journey.

After graduating from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, I served as a Surface Warfare Officer onboard USS Vicksburg (Electrical Officer) and USS Samuel B. Roberts (Navigator and Asst. Operations Officer), deploying once on each ship. When my service commitment came to an end, I found Protiviti through a military head-hunting firm. I was hired into the TC-TSO (Technology Strategy and Operations) solution as a Senior Consultant. Over the course of my almost six years at Protiviti, I am now an Associate Director and have become one of the leaders in our TSO-TPE (Technology Program Execution) practice focusing on leading and executing ERP and other large scale software implementations for our clients.

  • Why is having a Veterans ENG group important to you and the firm overall?

Military experience is often overlooked as a vital diversity category. Military veterans have a unique background and history that we bring to the table and can offer Protiviti. Our different lived experiences, and the responsibility given to us at such young ages, provides a valuable perspective that Protiviti and any firm can benefit from.

The Veterans ENG is a fantastic resource to both those employees fresh out of the military or those that have been in Corporate America for a while. We provide a source of comradery that is often missed when a servicemember leaves the military as well as vital benefits to aid our ENG members. One recent example of this was providing an annual subscription to the Calm app to our members. The events that unfolded in Afghanistan deeply impacted many of our members and on top of other mental health benefits that Protiviti provides, I felt the Calm app would provide great additional support to our veterans.

  • What are some things the group has done to benefit the military and local community?

Many of our US offices have participated in the Marine Corps Reserve’s annual Toys for Tots toy drive during the holiday season. Our Minneapolis office has a Military Outreach Committee that has partnered with Every Third Saturday (ETS) for years to assist homeless veterans in the Twin Cities. Last year our Philadelphia office collected donations for the Delaware Center for Homeless Veterans. Opportunities for anyone to start an initiative or charity drive exist in all of our offices, and I encourage and empower our ENG members to run whatever initiatives make sense for their local market.

  • Is there any advice you would give to our Veterans that might not be going through the ‘traditional’ path of High School, College, Job?

Veterans at Protiviti, and in Corporate America, make up just a small percentage of the workforce – but the valuable insights and contributions that you bring should never be discredited by you or anyone else. You may not have all the hard skills and certifications for a specific job but remember that you have critical soft skills that are unique to you and your experiences.
