As Black Heritage Month comes to a close, it’s important not only to reflect on the celebrations and educational activities that took place, but also to remember that the spirit of this month should be carried throughout the entire year. At Protiviti, we are committed to fostering an inclusive environment where the rich history, culture, and contributions of Black individuals are recognized not just in February, but every day.
In a series of interviews with members from our Black Employee Inclusion Network Group (BEING), we explored their personal connections to Black Heritage Month and asked each of them what it means to them.

Black Heritage Month is a time to celebrate the history, culture, achievements, and contributions of Black individuals and communities. It also provides an opportunity to promote awareness, education, and understanding about Black history. It feels empowering to witness the unity and amplification of Black voices during this time of year.

From my perspective, Black History Month’s purpose is to celebrate the memory and sacrifice of all the figures throughout history who had the faith to overcome adversity in a place where they were constantly told they are not welcome, not worthy, and not human. Growing up in the United States, there are no heroes who look like me in the textbooks. Black History Month is a constant reminder that we belong, and we can be great.

Black Heritage Month means taking the time to intentionally celebrate and honor the contributions of African Americans, as well as the broader impact of Black culture on society as a whole. While I value and recognize Black heritage year-round, this month serves as a dedicated space to reflect on the rich history, struggles, and triumphs that have shaped not only African American communities but also the world at large. It’s a time to educate myself and others about the often-overlooked stories of resilience, creativity, and strength that have helped pave the way for progress.
As we move forward, let’s carry the lessons and reflections from Black Heritage Month into every month of the year.
