On November 11th, we take a moment to reflect on the significance of both Veterans Day in the United States and Remembrance Day in the United Kingdom. These holidays stand as a solemn reminder of the service, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of military members who have defended our freedoms across the globe. While Veterans Day honors those who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces, Remembrance Day—commemorated by wearing the iconic red poppy—pays tribute to the fallen soldiers of World War I and other conflicts. Both occasions call us to remember the courage and resilience of veterans who continue to inspire us every day.
At Protiviti, we are fortunate to have many veterans within our ranks. Their unique skills, leadership, and commitment are invaluable to the success of our firm. This year, as we celebrate Veterans Day, we would like to take a moment to highlight the stories of some of our exceptional veterans who now call Protiviti home.
Karma Tamang – Risk & Compliance Consultant, Chicago
I am a United States Marine Corps veteran who served as an Infantry Rifleman from 2016 to 2020. Before joining the military, I never envisioned being in the position I am today. The journey from a civilian, a Marine, a student, to now a Consultant at Protiviti has been transformative. The Marine Corps pushed me to my limits, challenging me physically, emotionally, and mentally. It was a rigorous life experience that shaped my character and instilled in me a sense of discipline and resilience.
During my service, I learned invaluable lessons about perseverance in the face of adversity, working under pressure, and the importance of leadership—skills that I apply daily in my project work. Whether working on complex challenges or collaborating with team members, the principles I homed in the Marines guide my actions and decision-making processes.
Perhaps the most profound lesson I took away from my military experience is appreciation. I am grateful for the opportunities I had, such as pursuing my education and building a career in a supportive environment. I am thankful for the friends and family who stood by me, and I deeply appreciate being part of a company like Protiviti, where I feel valued and connected.
My military experience has not only prepared me for my professional life but has also given me a perspective on life that enriches every aspect of who I am. I look forward to continuing to grow and contribute here, bringing the same dedication and commitment I had as a Marine Rifleman.
Rupert Fischer – Internal Audit & Financial Advisory Consultant, UK
I am the UK Military ENG Chapter leader and recently passed the Officer training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst (RMAS) after being selected by the Army Officer Selection Board (AOSB). RMAS develops leadership by testing character, intellect, and professional competences to a level demanded of a British Army Officer. This is a world-renowned academic faculty staffed by civilian researchers with expertise in Communication and Applied Behavioral Science, Defense and War Studies, and International Affairs alongside the best tactical instructors.
After training, new officers will be given a platoon of 30 soldiers to command, lead, and manage. These opportunities are rarely, if ever, given at such a young age to people and can allow them to learn and grow ahead of their peers, testing their styles and approaches in more than one domain.
A big take-away that I was able to transfer to my work at Protiviti was leadership regarding different personalities from different age groups, backgrounds, and cultures. I was pleasantly surprised at how diverse the cohort at RMAS was and believe the strength in diversity is something we also find here at Protiviti. My time at Sandhurst helped me understand more about leadership and people skills so that when returning to Protiviti, I found I was better able to work and lead across generations, cultures, ideas, and backgrounds.
Tineal De La Cruz – Business Performance Improvement Senior Consultant, Austin
I am a United State Air Force Veteran and served as a Security Forces Officer from 2011-2017. I am part of a large military family, with my father paving the way to serve our country. He normalized the military lifestyle of honor, valor, comradery, and structure. My own service in the military taught me resilience. As my fellow brothers and sisters in the armed forces can attest to the physical, emotional, and mental toll serving your country can have on us. I had to overcome, adapt, and remain vigilant in foreign surroundings, through long days, and with people of all backgrounds. It is an experience that embedded me to understand, plan, execute and pivot on a moment’s notice. FRAGO! (for those who know!)
As I nervously started the transition to civilian life, I quickly utilized my skills of adaption and resiliency. I utilized my veteran benefits to earn my gradate and post-graduate degrees. I started my search for a company that aligned to my values and a culture of welcoming me as myself. Protiviti has been inviting and supporting as I continue to build my life as a veteran, with my husband, and settling into our new home in Texas.
Looking Forward
As we look ahead to 2025, the Military ENG is excited to share our strategic plan, aimed at enhancing the experience of veterans within our firm while expanding the ENG’s impact across the organization. Our plan is focused on five key areas: expanding our internal network, supporting recruiting efforts, improving benefits for veteran employees, balancing national and local initiatives, and providing dedicated support for employees who are called to service through the Reserves and National Guard. These initiatives are designed to not only foster a stronger sense of community among our veterans but also ensure they are equipped with the tools, mentorship, and resources they need to thrive in their careers. We are committed to making 2025 a transformative year for the Military ENG and the veterans we proudly serve.
