This year, Protiviti’s Pride month theme is Out Loud and Out Proud. Guided by Protiviti’s ProPRIDE Employee Network Group, we’re focused on celebrating members of the community across the world as we share in the pride of living out loud!
In the spirit of the month, today we’re sharing two stories from our ProPRIDE group as our people share key moments and experiences that help them be Out Loud and Out Proud.
Hear From Our People
Drew, an Associate Director in our Risk and Compliance solution, shares part of his story:
What was your experience like coming out?
“Overall, my experiences in coming out have been positive and rewarding, both personally and professionally. One challenging aspect, however, is that coming out to others, particularly within consulting when you’re consistently collaborating with new individuals, is a continual process. While most of my experiences have helped instill a greater sense of confidence and belonging, there are occasional difficulties that come with navigating challenging conversations and environments.”
What are some of the benefits of being out and proud at work?
“Being out and proud offers the ability to maintain deeper and stronger connections with others, as it allows for the opportunity to lead as your most true and authentic self. It also opens the door to many conversations that may not otherwise be afforded to allow for growth and understanding across different individual experiences.”
What is your favorite thing about the LGBTQ+ community?
“My favorite aspect about the LGBTQ+ community is just that: we are truly a community. While there are vital differences in histories and ongoing experiences that are essential to recognize help shape different viewpoints, the LGBTQ+ community also has shared values, shared dreams, and shared struggles, that span across race, religion, generations, etc. that drive our thriving community.”

Tricia, an Associate Director in our Technology Consulting solution, expresses her experiences with being out and proud:
What does it mean to you to be out and proud?
“For me, being out and proud means being my authentic self no matter the environment, work, personal, and family. Many LGBTQ people must have different personas for different environments. When I first came out, that was me. I had my work persona, my personal persona, and my family persona. Each was different and keeping them straight was exhausting. When you are “Out and Proud” you can be your authentic self in every environment. The freedom that comes with this is indescribable.”
What challenges have you faced as an out and proud person?
“The biggest challenge I have faced being “Out and Proud” and continue to face is acceptance from my family. I come from an Evangelical family and many members have not accepted my wife and I – specifically our ability to get married. Other challenges include the prejudice my wife and I have encountered while on vacation in different parts of the country whether it be prolonged stares, or verbal attacks both directed at us and about us.”
What are some of the benefits of being out and proud at work?
“Being “Out and Proud” at work allows me to have meaningful conversations with my colleagues around LGBT issues and current events as well as being an ally and understanding resource for others making the decision to be Out or not.”
