I am always impressed by the onslaught of questions we get about community involvement during the recruiting season.  It is admirable that giving back reigns so supremely in a candidate’s assessment of a potential employer.   Community involvement has a fundamental place within Protiviti’s culture – for more on that, see here – and I always enjoy sharing our consultants’ stories on this topic.  Below is one such example of a recent experience that Matt, a consultant in Protiviti’s Chicago office, was able to provide.

In Matt’s own words:

“Protiviti employees joined more than 6,000 volunteers for the annual Chicago Cares Serve-a-thon.  Together, the volunteers transformed 24 Chicago public schools with new paint, colorful murals, fresh landscaping, and orderly libraries.  Given Protiviti’s superior math skills, our team was given the responsibility of creating a 15’x15’ multiplication table on Fairfield Academy’s blacktop on the Southwest side of the city.  Challenges the team encountered include: using a 12’ tape measure to make a 15’ grid, paint spills due to wind (and clumsiness), and applying the Pythagorean theorem outside of geometry class.

The proud team and their finished product.

The experience was extremely rewarding for all Protiviti employees who participated.  Watching the children explore their lively blacktop and new games made all the hard work worthwhile.  The following Monday, students entered a school with freshly painted walls throughout the building and a reinvented blacktop including four square, world and U.S. maps, hopscotch, and an amazing multiplication table – just in case the students want to study math at recess.”

No doubt some future business majors spent their recess doing exactly that.
