World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development: Why Dialogue Matters More Than Ever

Each year on May 21, organizations around the world recognize World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, a day designed by the United Nations that celebrates the richness of global cultures and reinforces the critical role that dialogue plays in fostering understanding, peace, and development.

In an increasingly interconnected world, cultural diversity is not simply something to acknowledge, it is something to actively engage with. This day serves as a reminder that our differences, when met with curiosity and respect, are a powerful driver of innovation, collaboration, and meaningful progress.

The Power of Cultural Diversity

Cultural diversity is as essential to humanity as biodiversity is to nature. Our varied traditions, languages, beliefs, and lived experiences shape how we see the world and how we solve problems together. When people from different backgrounds come together, they bring fresh perspectives that strengthen creativity, improve decision-making, and lead to more innovative solutions.

The United Nations and UNESCO emphasize that societies and organizations that promote cultural diversity and intercultural dialogue are better positioned to achieve sustainable development and long-term success.

Why Dialogue Is Central to Development

Dialogue is more than conversation, it is an intentional practice of listening, learning, and engaging across differences. Meaningful dialogue helps build trust, challenge assumptions, and create inclusive spaces where individuals feel seen, heard, and valued.

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development calls on individuals and organizations to deepen their understanding of cultures beyond their own and to recognize culture as a shared public good that strengthens social cohesion, economic growth, and human dignity.

Recognizing the Day with MENG: The Value of Cultural Diversity in Business

To recognize this important day, our Multicultural Employee Network Group (MENG) is hosting a global internal panel event, The Value of Cultural Diversity in Business, for employees across our firm. This discussion will bring together voices from across regions and backgrounds to explore how cultural diversity fuels innovation, strengthens client relationships, and supports more inclusive and effective business outcomes.

By creating space for open dialogue and shared learning, the panel reflects MENG’s continued commitment to fostering belonging and leveraging the power of diverse perspectives within our global workforce.

Culture Spotlight: Anupama Menon

As part of our celebration, we are also honored to highlight a culture share from Anupama Menon, who offers a personal and creative reflection of her heritage through Mandala art from India.

Anupama Menon is a Senior Manager within the Legal Risk & Compliance capability based in Toronto. In addition to her client-facing role, Anupama serves as a passionate inclusion champion in Canada, helping create spaces where employees feel empowered to bring their authentic selves to work.

Deeply committed to fostering inclusion and belonging, Anupama actively supports initiatives that promote dialogue, connection, and cultural understanding across teams. She has played a leading role in organizing internal events and panels that elevate diverse voices and encourage thoughtful conversations, most recently serving as the organizer for programming such as an International Women’s Day panel, bringing together colleagues across regions and roles.

For Anupama, inclusion is both personal and creative. Through her culture sharing, she highlights mandala art from India, an original creative practice that reflects mindfulness, tradition, and self-expression. As a self‑taught artist, Anupama uses mandala drawing as a way to relax, focus, and connect with her culture and is an example of how cultural identity can be expressed through art, reflection, and everyday practices.

Anupama’s leadership, authenticity, and commitment to dialogue make her a valued voice at Protiviti and a meaningful contributor to conversations around cultural diversity, well‑being, and belonging.

Moving Forward Together

World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development reminds us that diversity alone is not enough—what truly drives progress is our willingness to engage with one another thoughtfully and respectfully. Through dialogue, learning, and shared experiences, we can continue to build a workplace where every voice is valued and every culture is respected.
