The month of November is beginning to be known as Movember across the globe, and that is not an exception here at Protiviti. In 2003, 30 individuals in Melbourne, Australia began a movement to change the face of men’s health and it has grown to have almost 900,000 participants annually. Many of our consultants across the globe embraced the Movember movement this year to help raise vital awareness and funds for men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer initiatives. Men’s health and awareness is often something that goes overlooked as it can be underpublicized. Movember is so unique and innovative that it counteracts that perception with the definition of macho: a mustache.
To highlight the importance of what Movember is and why people participate here at Protiviti, let’s take a look at these statistics:
- 1 in 6 men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer in their lifetime.
- This year 242,000 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed.
- This year 8,290 men will be diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Let’s meet our Protiviti Mo Bros and understand why these passionate Protiviti employees were moved to participate in Movember for 2012.
Houston, Texas Senior Manager, Eric:
“The reason I support Movember is that I hadn’t spoken with my father for four years prior to his death – long story that I won’t trouble you with – and if my father had sought help for his apparent illness and had the issue diagnosed, not only might he have extended his life, but I also hope that we would have communicated again.”
Ft. Lauderdale, Florida Manager, Joe:
“A mustache is not a facial hair style that is typically worn by the 20-30 age group so, in
growing something that is uncharacteristic, you are inherently approached by people
with questions. This is an opportunity to explain the program as well as get the word
out on men’s health. Essentially you become a walking billboard.
I think this is a great cause and am happy to participate. In addition, RHI offers a gift
matching program where they match a percentage of all the money raised through the
program.”
Frankfurt, Germany Manager, Mathias:
“My team MoPros for Germany came in contact with Movember last year during a
project at a client site. Lots of people were doing it and we found this a way
to do something quite interesting and also fun. This year we decided to participate
on our own. We liked the idea of doing something positive for a specifically male
cancer problem and we liked the idea of how this is supported. Having said that, we
are enjoying ourselves wearing our moustaches with pride, answering questions
that obviously came from others.”
